Alistair began learning the cello in Sydney Australia with Marcus Hartstein and David Pereira. After attending Newtown High School of Performing Arts, Alistair completed his Bachelor Music (honours I)/Bachelor Arts (philosophy) in 2010 at the University of New South Wales. On graduating, Alistair was awarded the university medal for outstanding performance ability and academic achievement. In the same year, Alistair received an Ian Potter Cultural Trust Grant, in order to pursue studies under Professor Mats Rondin at the Malmö Musikhögskolan in Sweden. During his time there, he was awarded the Musikhögskolan lokal stipendier for string playing as well as the Musikhögskolan trio ensemble prize. In 2015, Alistair was awarded a masters degree from the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague where he studied with Larissa Groeneveld. Since then he has been performing at festivals in Germany, Poland and Italy with the Stargaze ensemble.
Alistair is at home in both classical and non-classical genres and has performed with orchestras including the Residentie Orkest, the Malmö Opera Orchestra and the Australian Youth Orchestra. In 2010 he toured with the internationally acclaimed British band Mumford and Sons and has since then, performed alongside Richard Reed Perry (Arcade Fire) and Bryce Dessner (The National).
